Along with Hume, Bentham was an early and staunch supporter from the utilitarian idea, and was an avid jail reformer, advocate for democracy, and organization atheist. Bentham's sights about legislation and jurisprudence had been popularized by his student John Austin. Austin was the initial chair of law at the new University of London, from 1829.
